Yellowhead Institute generates critical Indigenous perspectives. The Institute is an Indigenous-led publisher based in the Faculty of Arts at Toronto Metropolitan University. Drawing on Indigenous philosophy and rooted in community networks, Yellowhead provides critical, independent and accessible resources that amplify Indigenous voices advocating for alternatives to settler colonialism and reclamation of Indigenous land and life.
The Yellowhead Brief publishes topical and critical interventions into Indigenous policy, law, and governance, broadly defined. Typically, these commentaries are written for a public audience, accessible, and are usually 800-1,000 words in length. The Brief is published on an ongoing basis, typically twice a month.
Yellowhead Special Reports are research intensive, examining difficult questions and challenges in the relationship between Canadians and Indigenous communities while offering evidence-based solutions. Special Reports are published quarterly and are typically between 4000-8000 words in length.
Yellowhead Features offer unique, digital publications aimed at promoting education and shifting the narrative on Indigenous issues in Canada. Features range in format; from maps and info-graphics to podcasts and short films or animations. Yellowhead features are published 4-6 times a year.

Artists, Photographers, and Media Creatives
Yellowhead works to ensure that our resources are accessible to community audiences. To this end, we collaborate with Indigenous artists, photographers as well audio and video editors, filmmakers, graphic designers and animators. Yellowhead offers licensing agreements and commissions new work. Send us a bio along with samples of existing work to be featured in Yellowhead content.
Yellowhead is particularly interested in pitches from Indigenous writers, researchers and artists. The editorial board meets regularly to review submissions. Yellowhead typically offers $400 for accepted Briefs, $1500 – $2000 for Special Reports, and CARFAC rates (at minimum) apply for all art.

Note on the Use of AI
Yellowhead is currently in the process of developing a framework to guide our use of Artificial Intelligence. Our process is informed by our values of self-determination, relational accountability, rigorous scholarship and critical thinking, trust and accountability, knowledge stewardship, privacy, data sovereignty, confidentiality, solidarity, and accessibility and inclusion. While we work on it, here are some ways that we do not use AI right now:
Generative AI for writing, figures, and references;
Artwork and image creation;
Transcription of research interviews and other audio files;
Research analysis and summarizing;
To replace expert, community, or Elder review;
To process any form of Indigenous knowledge.
When submitting to Yellowhead, we ask that you disclose any use of AI in the creation of your submission to support us in reviewing your piece.
